Based on a true story. That is always a loaded statement. Unless it is a documentary, the lines are always going to be gray. We have Moneyball on one side and this movie on the other. While I do believe it is based on a true story, aren't most works of fiction outside of horror and fantasy?

I'm not going to spend a ton of time on this. It is just not funny. You would think if it was written by Ben Best and Danny McBride that there would be something comedic in this film. There is not. The special effects look pretty good. So, they must have gotten a good budget for them. It is shot with shaky cam but there are some comprehensible action scenes. But nothing works. Super is a great movie. And surprisingly personal. James Gunn's last film was 2006's Slither starring Nathan Fillion. It was a box office bomb that was very funny and gory. You people missed out. But since Slither, James Gunn has made a bunch of web movies and gotten divorced from Jenna Fischer (Pam from The Office). You can tell his inspiration was from what he went through in his divorce.

The reason this post is started with that quote is because the advertising around this movie may be a little misleading. Heck, even the poster conveys light comedy. But take it from me, the movie is a serious drama. Yes, there is levity to be found in the film, but it also is frank and honest about depression.

Mel Gibson is the other elephant in the room. Rango is being sold on Johnny Depp's name. I don't really care one way or another, but just thought it was worth mentioning. Mostly because I don't get it. I guess the marketing machine likes name recognition. I just don't think it will sway people one way or another. It's a cartoon. "Ooooh, JD is the voice! I was on the fence but now I am in!" Is someone in the world saying that? Anyways.

Based on the true story of Micky Ward, that's not the reason to go see the movie. The real reason, starting with the first frame of the film Christian Bale memorizes us as Micky's older brother "Dicky". He's astonishing. And we shouldn't be surprised. He's done it in movie roles before. Unlike his counter point (cough cough Wahlberg) you never once think he's acting. You think he is Dicky.

In my experience, there are a lot of movies that show promise, but don't quite get there. "The Dilemma" is the perfect example of such. Similar to "The Break Up" (in setting, dramedy and characters) it tries to be more grounded while inserting slapstick or reactions that no human would make.

This may sound like I hated it, but I mostly enjoyed it. In case you didn't know, I spent the first couple years of college in Pharmacy school. During my time I roomed with a fellow Pharmacy student named Dirk. Imagine my surprise to find him on WGN this morning educating me of the dangers of accurate children's dosage.

Congrats, Dirk.

Seen the other six movies?
Remember when the guy from Twilight got killed in Goblet of Fire?
Is it still for kids? Not really. Young adults and people like me.
It's good. If you haven't seen the others, don't go. If you have, why are you even on K.Nugs? GOGOGO!

Did you enjoy it?
Yeppers.

Would you see it in theaters again?
Probably will. Possibly IMAX.

Would you buy it?
